What To Wear In Tulum
Although you’ll find some backpackers and digital nomads here, the vibe in Tulum is generally more upscale and aesthetic.
It’s that trying, but not trying…. that effortlessly flawless?
So during the day, bathing suits, cute cover ups, and strappy sandals are totally fine.
Then at night, the crowd gets a little more dressed up.
It’s still quite warm at night, so I recommend wearing trendy pieces that are loose-fitting and breathable.
Here, think flowy dresses, linens, and chic rompers.
I also highly recommend wearing sandals that are flat or have low heels at night, and NO HIGH HEELS.
Many of the sidewalks and roads in Tulum are unpaved, so high heels are not your friend here!
As far as makeup and jewelry, I suggest keeping both more minimal to keep with the boho-chic vibes, and prevent yourself from getting too hot.
Another important thing to know is that some of the nicer restaurants have dress codes.
So make sure to check what the proper attire is before you head out for the night.
For example, if you plan on visiting Kin Toh at Azulik, the dress code for women is to look polished, and no swimwear or athletic wear is allowed.

Tulum Weather By Month
Tulum has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season.
May-October
The rainy season runs from May to October, and during this time, you can expect hot temperatures with high humidity levels and frequent rain showers.
The average temperature during this period is around 28°C (82°F).
While the rainy season may not be ideal for beaching or outdoor activities, it’s a good time to visit Tulum if you’re looking for cheaper accommodations and fewer crowds.
November-April
On the other hand, the dry season runs from November to April, offering warm temperatures with lower humidity levels and little rain.
The average temperature during this period is around 24°C (75°F), making it an excellent time for outdoor activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and exploring Tulum’s many natural wonders.
This is also peak tourist season in Tulum, so expect higher hotel rates and more crowded attractions.
Best Time To Visit Tulum
Overall, the best time to go to Tulum depends on your preferences.
If you’re looking for lower prices and don’t mind some rainy days, consider visiting during the rainy season.
However, if you want to enjoy sunny days with minimal rain and take advantage of all that Tulum has to offer without worrying about crowds or high prices, then plan your trip during the high season between November and April.
I think February is the sweet spot, and the best time to visit Tulum.
It’s got the best weather, and it’s right in between the New Years and spring break crowd!
What To Pack For Tulum
1. Luggage
When it comes to packing for a trip to Tulum, the first thing to consider is your luggage.
While you might be tempted to bring a large suitcase with all your favorite outfits and accessories, I recommend traveling light and sticking to a carry-on suitcase.
Why?
For starters, many hotels and Airbnbs in Tulum are located on unpaved roads or have limited storage space, making it difficult to maneuver large suitcases.
With a carry-on suitcase, you’ll have everything you need for your trip without the added stress of lugging around heavy bags.
Plus, you’ll save time by avoiding long lines at baggage claim and can easily hop on public transportation or rent a bike without worrying about oversized luggage.
This is the carry-on suitcase from Target I get tons of questions about. It’s gorgeous, and a great dupe for more expensive suitcases!
2. Cover ups
If you’re planning a trip to Tulum, you don’t want to forget cute cover-ups.
These versatile pieces are essential for any beach vacation, and Tulum is no exception.
Not only do they provide an extra layer of protection from the sun’s rays, but they also make it easy to transition from the beach to other activities without having to change your entire outfit.
Whether you’re heading out for lunch at a beachside restaurant or exploring the local markets, a cover-up or sarong will keep you comfortable and looking chic.
Plus, they take up minimal space in your luggage, making them the perfect addition to any Tulum packing list.
From flowy maxi dresses to sheer kaftans, there are endless options when it comes to choosing the perfect cover-up or sarong for your Tulum adventure.
3. Tops
When it comes to packing tops for a trip to Tulum, the key is to focus on lightweight, breathable fabrics that will keep you cool in the hot and humid climate.
Tank tops and tees are great options for daytime activities, while long-sleeved shirts made from thin materials like linen or cotton are perfect for cooler evenings.
Crop tops and off-the-shoulder tops are also popular choices on the Tulum scene.
I like to pack neutral colored tops, so I can easily mix and match outfits when I travel.
Whether you’re lounging on the sand or exploring the local attractions, having a variety of versatile tops will allow you to create different outfits for any occasion during your stay in Tulum.

4. Shorts
As far as shorts go, denim is always a classic option.
But lightweight cotton or linen shorts are my top pick for keeping cool in the hot and humid weather.
High-waisted shorts are great for pairing with crop tops or tucked-in blouses, while flowy shorts with boho patterns can make your vacation wardrobe pop.
If you plan on going on any outdoor adventures like hiking or exploring the ruins, pack running shorts or biker shorts made from moisture-wicking materials.
Don’t forget to bring at least one pair of dressier shorts for going out at night.
High waisted tailored shorts are perfect for dressing up with cute sandals.
5. Dresses
While you’re planning your Tulum outfits, the key is to choose styles that are both comfortable and cute.
Maxi dresses are a great option, as they’re flowy and lightweight, which makes them perfect for keeping cool in the hot and humid climate.
Sundresses with puffed sleeves or off-the-shoulder styles are also popular choices, as they’re easy to slip on over your swimsuit or dress up for an evening out.
For a more boho look, consider packing a kaftan or tunic-style dress made from breezy fabrics or linen.

6. Swimsuits
Of course, it’s essential to bring along cute swimsuits that are both stylish and functional.
One-piece bathing suits are always a classic option, and they’re great for activities like swimming or snorkeling.
If you want to show off some skin (some beaches in Tulum are topless), consider packing a string bikini or a cut-out one-piece.
Don’t forget to bring along that beach cover-up to wear over your swimsuit when walking around town or grabbing lunch at one of the beachside restaurants.
Here’s the bikini I always get questions about from Amazon!
7. Light jacket
While Tulum is known for its warm and sunny weather, it’s still important to pack a light jacket for those beachside nights.
Evenings in Tulum can be cooler than you might expect, especially during the winter months, so having a layer to throw on can make all the difference.
If you plan on exploring some of the nearby cenotes or taking a boat ride along the coast, a light jacket can also protect you from any wind chill.
And if you’re visiting in the rainy season, a light jacket can help protect you from the rain.
Opt for something lightweight and easy to pack, like a light hoodie or light sweater.
With a little bit of planning ahead, you’ll be able to enjoy all that Tulum has to offer without having to worry about feeling chilly after sunset.
8. Wide brimmed hat
Packing a hat is essential when traveling to Tulum, as the sun can be pretty strong during the day.
A sun hat will not only protect your face and scalp from harmful UV rays, but it can also help keep you cool in the heat.
When choosing a hat for your trip, look for something with a wide brim that will provide ample shade.
A floppy straw hat is a great option that can be dressed up or down depending on your plans for the day.
Overall, bringing along a stylish and functional hat is a must when visiting Tulum to ensure that you stay protected and comfortable.

Packing a beach bag is essential when visiting Tulum, as this tropical paradise boasts some of the most stunning beaches in the world.
A beach bag allows you to bring all the essentials you need for a day spent lounging on the sand or exploring nearby attractions.
You’ll want to pack a bag big enough to fit all your essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a towel, water, snacks, or a Kindle.
A spacious tote or backpack with multiple compartments is ideal for keeping all your belongings organized and easily accessible throughout the day.
Overall, packing a well-stocked beach bag is crucial for a Tulum packing list to ensure that you have everything you need for a fun and relaxing time at the beach.
11. Belt bag
When you’re out and about in Tulum, a belt bag is a convenient and practical accessory to have.
I love belt bags because they’re such a great alternative to carrying a bulkier backpack or purse.
Not to mention, they’re cute and hold all of your valuables within easy reach.
They’re especially useful in crowded places like markets or festivals where pickpocketing can be a concern.
Overall, packing a belt bag is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a convenient way to carry valuables while exploring Tulum.

Some essential items to include in your evening bag are cash, ID, credit cards, lip gloss or other makeup items, and your phone.
Overall, packing an evening bag or clutch purse is important when visiting Tulum if you plan on enjoying a few cocktails out at night.
13. Underwear
When packing for a trip to Tulum, it’s important to remember that the climate is hot and humid, which means you’ll want to choose undergarments that are both comfortable and breathable.

I recommend my favorite 5-pack of simple black thongs from Amazon.
14. Sports bras
Packing breathable sports bras is essential or anyone planning a trip to Tulum.
With its warm and humid climate, it’s important to wear clothing that’s comfortable and breathable, especially for activities like hiking, yoga, or exploring Mayan ruins.
A good quality sports bra not only offers the necessary support but also helps wick away sweat.
This helps prevent discomfort, chafing, and irritation while keeping you cool and dry.
So whether you’re exploring ancient ruins or strolling through downtown Tulum, don’t forget to pack a few sports bras to keep you comfortable.
15. Loungewear
While Tulum is known for its beautiful beaches and warm weather, there may be times during your trip when you just want to relax and unwind in the comfort of your hotel or Airbnb.

Tulum has many upscale restaurants and bars where dressing up is required or preferred.
Cute sandals or low heels can help elevate your outfit for a night out.
Opting for statement sandals can add a fun pop of color and texture, while choosing neutral colors like black or nude can make them versatile enough to wear with multiple outfits.
Also, if you didn’t catch this earlier- leave your high heels at home!
Many of the sidewalks and roads in Tulum are unpaved, so heels are not your friend here.
Overall, cute sandals or low heels should be on any Tulum packing list for a fun night out.
18. Tennis shoes
Once you’ve picked out your sandals, it’s also crucial to bring a pair of tennis shoes for more active pursuits.
